ElectroChem
Radha Jalan is the CEO of ElectroChem Inc.
in Woburn, Massachusetts, a developer of fuel cells for power systems
and research.
Jalan took over the company 10 years ago. Armed only with a partially
developed idea, a fuel cell in a suitcase, she has built a multimillion-dollar
business. NASA bought the first suitcase fuel cell, using it to
show the potential for everyday use of fuel cells that the agency
had been using for years to power spacecraft.
From there, ElectroChem went into making equipment and supplies
for fuel cell research. Since 1992, ElectroChem has brought more
than 15 product lines to market. And its clients are on every continent
and include small businesses, Fortune 500 companies, universities
and governments.
Ms. Jalan believed that finding gold isn't the only way to make
money. Her company was selling the products akin to shovels used
by “prospectors” in the fuel cell industry.
The Center encouraged Jalan to begin doing her own prospecting.
This involved helping her develop a business strategy and presentation
to investors. The result (after years of effort), an $8 million
license of ElectroChem’s Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell
to a group of investors who formed a company to bring reliable clean
power to the residential market.
"We are now seeing the great promise of our fuel cell technology
come to life. You helped us get to this point.”
