Phoenix Science & Technology
Through
funding from contracts and research grants, Phoenix Science &
Technology (PS&T) in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts has grown
from 2 to 7 employees. Ray Schaefer launched the company as vehicle
to commercialize a new type of UV lamp technology for disinfecting
water supplies. But his focus on developing the lamp technology
made it next to impossible for him also to develop a commercialization
strategy.
The EBTC worked with Ray to understand his view of potential competitors
and collaborators. This gave the Center a profile for the types
of companies that they would want to engage as potential partners
to get the lamp to market.
The Center identified 20 key persons involved in the supply chain,
and invited them to meet with PS&T. With coaching, Ray made
a presentation to this group.
Ray reported back that several weeks following the
meeting, he was in partnership discussions with one of the participants
who wished to manufacture the lamp component of his UV product line.
Ultimately, Ray and his new partner came to terms that included
an investment in his development program and would trigger more
follow on funding from the EPA SBIR program.

Ray has won two additional EPA SBIR Awards and an NIST Advanced
Technology Program Award. The EBTC has continued its relationship
with PS&T by assembling a Corporate Advisory Board with representatives
from Massachusetts industry that act as a sounding board and a resource
locator as Ray moves to open channels to his new markets. Ray hopes
to begin making some sales of his sparker products in the coming
year.
