The Environmental Business and Technology
Center (EBTC) is the Commonwealth’s venture development center
for early stage, environmentally proactive technology businesses.
The Center helps bring economically viable, environmentally advantageous
technologies related to clean water, renewable energy, and cleaner
materials and industrial processes to the market.
The EBTC was created in 1994 at the University of Massachusetts
(UMass) as part of the Commonwealth’s pioneering initiative,
STEP, in which
the Commonwealth, UMass and industry joined forces to promote the
economic development of environmentally proactive industries. The
Center can mobilize resources at the UMass
such as labs, equipment, scientific expertise and students, as well
as regulatory expertise at state agencies.
The Center focuses on key market segments that have attractive
growth prospects:
- Water filtration, treatment, recycling and conservation products
and services;
- Wind, solar, and fuel cell power systems; and
- Materials and processes that use or reuse non-hazardous substances.
This focus gives the Center the unique expertise necessary to understand
the strategy, tactics and culture of companies within these markets, and manage resources
needed to gain government, industry, and investor participation.
The Center’s team has over 25 years of experience in all
aspects of early-stage venture development, including:
- Technology assessment;
- Due diligence;
- Demonstration projects;
- Raising capital; and
- Navigating regulatory barriers.
The Center works hard to bring its clients investment capital and
strategic partnerships and has earned the respect of investors for
the Center’s accurate and objective analysis. The Center’s
company clients have raised over $50 million in private seed capital.
